What is Low Vision? Low vision, or partial sight, is a visual condition that cannot be corrected by conventional eyeglasses or contact lenses. A variety of disorders that affect the eye, most age-related, may cause low vision. Some of these conditions include: Macular degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma and Retinitis Pigmentosa. Low vision is the third most commonly occurring physical impairment in those over 65, exceeded only by heart disease and arthritis. Back to top What is Low Vision Rehabilitation? Low vision rehabilitation is the evaluation and treatment of individuals with low vision to help them overcome the handicapping effects of their visual impairment. Based on individual lifestyle needs, solutions will be sought to help each patient achieve their visual goals. This may include the recommendation of optical and non-optical devices known as “low vision aids”. Back to top What are Low Vision Aids? Low vision aids are special lens systems designed to magnify or illuminate images to improve visual acuity. Low vision aids may take the form of magnifiers, telescopes, high-powered spectacles or electronic devices. Non-optical devices include large-print reading materials, writing and signature guides and much more. Remember, any device that you find helpful is worth using. Back to top What can I expect from Low Vision Rehabilitation? Your initial low vision rehabilitation evaluation will take approximately one to two hours. Low Vision Rehabilitation will not restore your lost sight. Low vision rehabilitation is a process whereby our staff will assist you in maximizing your remaining functional vision. Back to top How much will it cost? Currently, Medicare and most private insurance companies will not cover a low vision evaluation. However, Medicaid will cover the exam. One or more optical devices may be recommended during the process. These devices are generally not a covered benefit. (If you do schedule an appointment with Dr. Miles for a low vision evaluation, you will not be required to purchase any low vision devices.) Back to top How do I get started? Ask your doctor if a low vision evaluation is right for you. If so, have your physician refer you to our clinic and we will be happy to schedule your low vision rehabilitation evaluation! To prepare you for your first visit, we will send you an informative letter and questionnaire to help you identify your visual goals. Please bring any eyeglasses, magnifiers or other devices that you are currently using. These will greatly assist our staff in putting together a treatment plan just for you!
